You don’t have to be a smoker to experience oral cancer. Oral cancers cause thousands of deaths in the US each year. That’s why we’re committed to screening for abnormal and precancerous tissues at their very earliest forms.
Although some people may develop oral cancer without any type of health or lifestyle risk factors, some people may be more predisposed to the condition than others. Some of the most common risks include:
- Sun exposure
- Alcohol or tobacco use
- History of cancers
- Viruses such as HPV
Dr. Held looks specifically for tissues that appear abnormal from the other areas throughout your head and neck. Examples include bumps, raised tissues, sores that do not heal within 2 weeks, white or red lesions, or cysts.
If precancerous or abnormal tissues are noted, we will recommend a biopsy or follow up to monitor their development. Some conditions may need to be treated by an oral pathologist, who specializes in cancers of the mouth and throat.
If you’ve noticed an area in your mouth that looks different from the rest of your oral tissues, or have experienced a sore that has not healed in a timely manner, please call us to set up an exam with Dr. Held at your earliest chance. Your family deserves the peace of mind.
